- Twice-a-year jobs
- Can be done
This month in the yardJanuary: Lawns are dormant. It is the season for walls, new bed layouts and planting trees and shrubs.February: Beds get cut back, crape myrtles get a light prune, and winter debris comes out before green-up.March: Lawns start to green. Spring cleanups, fresh pine straw and the first cuts of the year.April: Mowing is weekly again. Warm soil makes it prime time for new sod and spring planting.May: Azaleas get shaped once the blooms drop. Watering gets checked before the real heat.June: Full summer growth. Weekly mowing and edging, and watering that keeps up with the heat.July: Peak heat. New sod still takes with steady water, and hedges get a mid-season trim.August: Hot and often dry. Steady mowing and good watering carry the lawn through it.September: Growth starts to ease. A good month to plan fall planting and new beds.October: Fall planting season opens, and beds get fresh pine straw ahead of the holidays.November: Leaves come down. Fall cleanups, the last cuts of the year and one more round of straw.December: Leaf cleanup wraps up. The dormant season is a good time for walls and design work.
